2012 Murder in Montgomery Village Apartments

STATUS: OPENOn July 9, 2012 Robert Reed Jr, 28, was found lying in the grass near an open back door of the apartment located at 1417 Daylily Drive in the Montgomery Village Apartments. Investigators estimate he had been lying there for 24 to 36 hours before being discovered. His family would like his murderer caught and brought to justice. In Search of New Leads

STATUS: OPENKPD Investigators are seeking the help from the community to solve the murder of Dion Glass. Dion was shot around 5 am in the parking lot at the corner of Wilson Av and Harrison St on Sunday, July 28, 2019. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter at UT Medical at the young age of 24.
At this time police have very little to go on and are imploring the community to come forward. You can remain 100% ANONYMOUS by submitting a tip through Crime Stoppers. Seeking Justice for Rekia Kinnebrew

STATUS: OPENDuring the early morning hours of Sunday, May 20, 2018 Rekia Kinnebrew, 32 was shot multiple times in front of 3217 E. Fifth Avenue and found several blocks away at the corner of Cherry St. and Magnolia Ave. Several hours later Rekia succumbed to her injuries.
KPD Investigators determined that the attack stemmed from an earlier argument involving several people at a different location. The argument escalated when the suspect fired multiple times at the victim, hitting Rekia.

Seven Years and Still Looking for Answers

STATUS: OPENSeven years ago, Gary Cooley (57) and Regina Keck (46) were discovered dead inside Gary’s home on Alma Avenue in Knoxville. Knoxville Police Department Investigators say the East Knoxville case has gone unsolved.
When Cooley failed to show up to work on April 29, 2014, his co-workers at the Knox Housing Partnership sent someone to check on him. The employee found Cooley’s door wide open and called the police.
Police determined that Cooley and Keck were shot, but seven years later there have been no arrests.
This is still considered an open case and we’re soliciting the community to try to get some help, resolution and justice for the victims and their families. Who Killed Lee Byford?

STATUS: OPENLeslie “Lee” Guy Byford would have turned 45 this year, but he was murdered on January 5, 2013, his 37th birthday.
Lee was described by his family and friends as kindhearted and generous. That day he was giving Gerod Murphy a ride home from helping him at his auto-painting shop. A mutual friend introduced them saying Gerod was out of work and asked if Lee had anything around his shop for Gerod to do to earn money. Before taking Gerod home they stopped at the Stop N Go and then headed to Lee’s home on Bonnie View Avenue to tell his girlfriend he’d be back after dropping Gerod off at his home. This was around 9 pm.
As Lee was walking back to his SUV he spotted a person walking towards him wearing a mask and carrying a gun. Lee rushed to his SUV, a brief struggle ensued before Lee was able to jump in and lock his door. The gunman fired once striking the door. At this moment Lee stepped on the gas to get away and the gunman fired again, striking Lee. Gerod reached over and hit the accelerator, backing down the driveway until they became stuck in the ditch. Lee died in his SUV.
Lee’s girlfriend described the shooter as about 5’5”, wearing a blue hoodie and a black mask and gloves. Three witnesses came forward saying they say the killer running downhill, through the dark toward Magnolia Avenue.
KPD Investigators have many questions and are looking for the communities help.
Was this a robbery gone wrong? Lee was to receive $500 cash that day; did this make him a target? Who knew about this cash?
Did anyone hear or see anything suspicious that day…maybe at the auto-paint shop, at the Stop N Go or in the neighborhood? Maybe in the days, weeks, months or years following this murder someone mentioned something about the shooting.
Where did the killer come from? Where is the killer now?

Investigators Seek Missing Piece of Puzzle

STATUS: OPENBenjamin “Ben” Jernigan was murdered shortly after turning 28. Ben was born in Knoxville, graduated from Bearden HS and Pellissippi State Community College, served in the US Navy, and was attending UT, studying medical laboratory science. Ben had gone out with friends that fateful night to celebrate a friend’s birthday. A Traffic camera spotted him at 3:30 am turning off of Broadway onto Fairfax Avenue heading home when his car bottomed out at the railroad crossing near Forsythe Street causing the rear impact safety device on his car to shut down his fuel pump. As Ben tried to figure out what went wrong tragedy struck. Almost 2-hours later, at around 5:45 am, a nearby resident called 9-1-1 to report a stalled car along Fairfax, which is where the responding officer found Ben, slumped over the center console, with a gunshot wound. When officers arrived they noticed the owner’s manual pulled out of the glove box and the interior light still on. Five years later KPD investigators are still looking for the missing piece of the puzzle, asking for witnesses to come forward. Maybe you heard someone talking about Ben’s murder or you recall seeing someone or hearing something unusual that night. If so, please contact Crime Stoppers with your information. While sitting in the drive-thru at the Krystal’s on Broadway in North Knoxville on March 31, 2019 Jessie Roberts, 25 heard the sound of gunfire and told her wife and sister-in-law, “Bullets don’t have eyes.” Little did any of them know these would be some of the last words spoken by Jessie.
They were simply sitting in the drive-thru waiting for their order while listening to music and talking about the concert they had just attended. They were carefree and having a good time, when a shot rang out from the parking lot of a club called The Vibe across the street and a couple of blocks down from the Krystal drive-thru. Before they could leave the area, Jessie was struck by a bullet that had come through the passenger door.
Jessie’s mother, Charlene Roberts, is left with no closure, no peace and no answers. “Please someone speak up, come forth. I need this closure; her son needs it. I’m tired of looking at pictures. Please come forth,” said Roberts. “Jessie’s young son needs justice, he needs to know his mother’s case has been solved.”
